Photomanipulation

The incredible power of the personal computer has initiated a shift in the way much prepress and design work is done. It's now possible to perform manipulations and color corrections that were once the exclusive domain of expensive dedicated prepress systems on these machines. This can mean tremendous time and cost savings for the client, and it opens up a whole new world of creative possibilities.

The examples shown here were produced for the comp stage of the 1996 GMC catalogues. Using inexpensive snapshots, magazine clippings and the power of desktop photomanipulation, our artists were able to create scenes that would have required hours to render by hand, or many thousands of dollars to set up and shoot. This method also allows the creative director to make changes at any stage quickly and inexpensively.

This image began as a page out of a magazine. First the green truck was removed. Next a small plastic model of the black Jimmy and the two motor cycles was photographed on a tabletop. Finally the snapshot was composited with the snowy background to indicate what the location shot might look like.

This image began as a scratched, badly damaged shot of the model riding in a convertible. The shot was scanned in and cleaned up, then the sunroof was illustrated in.
